Corallia in a strategic advisory board consultation for crossing the so-called “valley of death”

«Innovation and Commercialisation in the NMP thematic area - INCOMERA»

incomera-logoBrussels, 19 September 2014:  Converting research into a commercial success is still a challenge for most researchers and start-ups in Europe. Sufficient funding, either public or private, is rarely available for these later stages of the innovation cycle resulting in a severe setback in SMEs' cash flow while trying to bring a research outcome into the market.

Aiming at improving the efficiency of the process of successful market-oriented exploitation of research and overcoming the so-called "valley of death", Corallia participated in a consultation with high-profile experts (investors, European networks, EC policy officers) in Brussels on 16-17 September 2014. The main objective was to identify the barriers that hinder the commercialisation of research results and kick-off the design of a series of tailored services for the support of close-to-market activities, with the aim to give a strong boost to breakthrough innovation. Highly innovative SMEs that work and focus on the NMP technologies (Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies - NMP technologies), have a clear commercial ambition and a potential for high growth, will be the prime target.

A thorough analysis and evaluation of financing schemes and other innovation support services currently takes place with the view of proposing and developing specific activities (investment readiness, brokerage activities, assistance in applying for further EU risk finance, trainings). These activities will complement the existing EU mechanisms (e.g. SME Instrument) and regional innovation policies designed in the context of RIS3 with the ultimate goal to further enhance the effectiveness of all efforts for facilitating the commercial exploitation of innovation activities.

The services along with the first joint call for funding interregional projects that focus on the commercialization of research results of NMP technologies (December 2014) will be available on the new innovative online service platform developed d by INCOMERA project partners [link].

The consultation was held in the framework of the «Innovation and Commercialization in the NMP thematic area - INCOMERA» project which is co-financed by the European Commision under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7-ERANET-2013-RTD).

About INCOMERA project
The "Innovation and Commercialisation in the NMP thematic area - INCOMERA" project is a coordination and support action (CSA) especially devoted to NMP technologies (Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies). INCOMERA will address the problem of "valley of death", bringing together 21 different regional or national funding agencies, focusing on successfully ended, resarch projects with a high potential to become a commercial success. Through a series of transnational joint calls, INCOMERA will fund innovation services, will facilitate the transfer of knowledge on policy mixtures and funding tool in order to support cross-sectoral, cross regional projects.
The project is co-financed by European Commision under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7-ERANET-2013-RTD).
The project's main objectives are:
- To detect and financially support NMP research results likely to provide solutions for innovative products, processes or services
- To analyse and assess the lessons learned from the measures taken and supported in various Member States to exploit and/or to transform research results into products
- To provide operational guidance for supporting efficiently the successive steps between research and innovation, paying particular attention to the use of European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), in the context of Smart Specialization Strategies
